Method and citation

Each buyer's own investors' and acquirers' own home, about and fund pages were read through estate-fetch and stored whole (sha256 on every row). For every buyer's own page, four questions were answered from its own words: what kind of buyer, what data business it says it backs, how the page says it, the page, in its words. Every stated answer carries the sentence it rests on, checked against the stored text; 'not stated' means the buyer's own page read does not address the question. A buyer with several buyers' own pages reads 'varies' where they disagree. 14 buyers, 14 buyers' own pages.

What happens next

Item 01
Tell us what the company sells, how big it is and whether it is trading or closing.
Item 02
We match that against what each buyer on the register says it backs.
Item 03
We reply with the buyers that fit and the route: a licence, a sale of records, or an adviser for the whole company.

No buyer on this register pays to appear or was asked to. Our fee is paid by the company: 12.5% of the deal, with a minimum, when we act as its exclusive agent to license its data, or 10%, with a minimum, when its data joins a bundle; for a sale of the whole company we introduce an adviser, and any fee a buyer pays us is credited to the company.

Frequently asked

Who would buy my data company?
Three kinds of buyer say so on their own pages here: private equity and growth equity firms such as STG, Hg and Spectrum Equity, the venture arms of data platforms such as Databricks Ventures, and venture firms that back data founders such as AME Cloud Ventures and Zero Prime.(Who buys data companies, in their own words: every row, with its source)
Do these firms buy a whole data company or invest in one?
Both. Private equity firms such as STG and Abry describe investing in mid-market companies, while the platforms' venture arms and the venture firms describe backing founders and funding rounds. The page's own words are quoted on each row so you can see which it is.(Who buys data companies, in their own words: every row, with its source)
What kind of data business does each one back?
5 name information services or proprietary data, 3 data infrastructure, 3 AI and data companies, and 3 data and analytics software.(Who buys data companies, in their own words: every row, with its source)
Does selling a data company need a government filing?
Sometimes. In the US, CFIUS can review a foreign buyer of a business holding sensitive personal data on more than one million people, and the Justice Department's bulk data rule bars some data deals with countries of concern. In the UK, an acquisition in the data infrastructure sector can need a mandatory notification under the National Security and Investment Act.(Who buys data companies, in their own words: every row, with its source)
Is my company on these buyers' radar if data is only a part of it?
Pamlico Capital, Spectrum Equity and Amplify Partners show data businesses among their holdings rather than naming data as a thesis, which suggests a company with a data product inside a wider service can still be in scope. Ask before you assume.(Who buys data companies, in their own words: every row, with its source)
Do you introduce us to these buyers?
Not straight away. We read your answers and reply with the buyers on the register that fit; with your written go-ahead we act for you on a licence of your data, and for a whole-company sale we introduce an adviser who approaches buyers. No buyer on the register pays us or was asked to appear.(Who buys data companies, in their own words: every row, with its source)
